ESPN officials announced that Austin, Texas will host the summer X-GAMES in 2014-2017.
Austin beat the three other finalists: Chicago, Detroit and Charlotte.
This event will be a huge boost to our economy and it meshes well with our young, “Keep Austin Weird” culture. The facilities were a major factor and it appears that ESPN will utilize the Circuit of the Americas track and create a huge festival type atmosphere. Some of the events include: BMX freestyle, several Motocross races, Skateboarding and Rallycross.
My only reservation was the sweltering Texas heat, but thankfully, ESPN thought about that too and is hosting the games May 15-18, which should provide gorgeous weather and comfortable temperatures.
Austin American Stateman explains what drew ESPN to Austin:
The 3.4-mile track is best known for the Formula One Grand Prix it hosted in November, but officials have stressed that it is more than a race track. The 1,500-acre complex includes the Austin 360 Amphitheater, which can hold 14,000 concert-goers.
ESPN also liked the topography of the circuit. Its iconic Turn One figures to be incorporated into the racing events while the main grandstand is likely to hold viewers for the big air sports.
Although the bulk of the competitions will be held at the circuit, a sport or some promotional events will likely be staged in downtown Austin.
This is just another huge win for Austin and will provide more national exposure for all of central Texas.
